We cruised into Kansas City the afternoon of August 28th. It was my birthday, my parents were meeting us here, and I had committed to meeting up with a former co-worker for happy hour. I was in for a great night.

I started the festivities with my friend at a bar called the Outpost. It was near our RV park and World of Fun amusement park (worldsoffun.com). The bar was filled with locals by the time we had got there, which was just after the specials began. The crowd seemed blue-collar, friendly, and familiar with the staff and patrons. I indulged in a KC local favorite, Boulevard Wheat Ale, while my buddy had a Guinness as we exchanged stories. It had only been about 3 weeks since I left my job, so the stories and content were still somewhat current. I enjoyed this time, but soon enough it was time to have the obligatory birthday dinner.

My parents had arrived by this time, so we decided to meet at the iconic Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que (joeskc.com). From the outside the restaurant appears to be an old 50’s gas station. Nothing fancy on the inside, just great BBQ that you order from a long line, but the food is almost instantly served to you. Since It was my birthday, I didn’t hold back. I ate not only my meal, but a portion of just about everyone else’s. My favorite were the baby backs, with a side of Kansas caviar. Everyone enjoyed and that just about did it for that night. We had a lot to do the next few days.

We woke up the next morning to a day at the Harry Truman Presidential Library (trumanlibrary.org). I love going to the presidential libraries, as you get a glimpse of what it was like to live during those years (if you hadn’t already). I had been to Richard Nixon’s in the past as well. They also serve as great history lessons and reminders. Talk about a tough 7 and half years, I don’t envy the job Truman had, but I do have great respect for the way he handled such tough times that included WWII and the Cold War. Truman had the tough task of dealing with two of the most notorious villains that this world has ever seen. The library was done well and took us about 2 hours to get through. To my surprise, the boys were attentive, asked great questions and were well behaved for most of the time we had been there.

By that evening, Jenn and I had been with the kids non-stop for about two weeks. It was time for them to be free, so we sent them to the nearby Kids Quest (kidsquest.com), at the Ameristar Casino while Jenn and I enjoyed splitting a pizza and beer. Mission accomplished…as we all seemed to be a lot more tolerant of each other after that break!

The following day was probably the coolest day that the kids had thus far. We took off for downtown to spend some time at the Legoland Discovery Center (legolanddiscoverycenter.com). We spent about 3 hours there, but truthfully the boys could have stayed all day. The venue had several different attractions to where you can build, design, ride etc. with your favorite Lego and themes. Nolan and Cole enjoyed building Lego cars and racing them on tracks, as well as launching them off of ramps. I am not much the mechanical person, so once I saw other Dad’s helping their kids, I basically copied those ideas so that my kids’ cars didn’t suck and come in last. This strategy paid off, they came in second to last.

During all this excitement, Jenn dismissed herself to check out the Hallmark headquarters (corporate.hallmark.com). It was in the same complex, here Jenn was able to learn the history of Hallmark, view holiday ornaments and meet a card designer. She is a big fan of the cards, store and even the Hallmark channel. I too love paying for expensive wrapping paper, $6 greeting cards and watch holiday specials to occupy my winter months. Very sad that I missed this one. J

On Jenn’s way over to Hallmark, she ran into a kid’s center, called the Kaleidoscope (hallmarkkaleidoscope.com). We ran from Lego to this venue as the kids were able to participate in a variety of crafts that included painting, coloring as well as making their own puzzle. We had run out of time though at this point, but had we had more, Crayola was nearby and would have been cool for the kids to take a look at. Kansas City was by far, the best place for our boys on the trip thus far. I highly recommend time with the kids if you get to KC.

That evening, after a change of clothes and a quick nap as I have become quite good at these. I am trying to script how to tell a future employer that these are mandatory, and I usually take them around 3pm. Anyway, we were off to see the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Green Bay Packers in an epic pre-season showdown where half of the Packers didn’t even make the trip. This was the day that Aaron Rodgers was announced as the highest paid NFL player due to some re-negotiations on his contract. At the very least, I was hoping to get close to Aaron to ask him for a loan. All kidding aside, the game was still very entertaining. The boys were able to enjoy it with their grandparents who are avid Chiefs fans. They were most entertained by Grandpa’s binoculars, and the stuffed Chiefs bear that my folks bought for them. Spoiler alert, we just secured tickets to see Notre Dame play in South Bend. More detail on actual football then!!
