Indian Casinos

Indian casinos, also known as Tribal casinos, are usually located on federally recognized Indian reservations. They range in size from small truck stops and convenience storesto some of the largest casinos in the country. At a small truck stop casino, you would generally find a handful of machines and these would be located in places such as Oklahoma or Wisconsin.Connecticut is home to one of the world’s largest casinos - Foxwoods Casino.

Different states have different legal agreements regarding Indian casinos. Depending on the agreement made, these Indian casinos can offer either Class II gaming or Class IIIgaming.

Class III (Class 3) gaming is what most people would describe as “normal” casino gaming. This is kind of casino gambling you would find at the majority of casinos in the country, such as LasVegas. Class III gaming involves the player playing against “the house” like in blackjack, craps, roulette, or any other table game, as well as slot machines.

Class II (Class 2) gaming, on the other hand, is slightly different. These are games where players compete against other players such as in poker and bingo. Over the years, casinos have found ways around this to offer other casino games similar to Class III games, however, adhering still to Class II rules. A great example of this would be Class II slot machinesthat closely resemble a normal, Class III machine but you will notice a small bingo card in the corner of the screen. So, in essence, you are actually playing a quicker version of virtual bingoagainst other players in the casino. The reels spin and you can see winning combinations. The reels, however, are “for entertainment purposes only” and your chances of winning are basedentirely on the bingo card in the corner.

Another example of Class II games would be player-banked table games where a player would compete against other players rather than against the casino. These look identical to traditional tablegames. The difference lays in the fact that players have to pay an ante of around $0.50-$1 per hand. In most cases there is someone who supplies the money to be the “bank” and the only moneythe casino receives is the ante made by each player.

Pari-Mutuel Casinos

Some states such as Arkansas or Delaware only allow casinos in pari-mutuel facilities. Pari-mutuel refers to locations with legalized wagering on horse or dog races; or inFlorida, jai-alai games. Since a vast majority of pari-mutuel facilities in the United States are racetracks, these types of casinos are often also known as “racinos,” a combination of thewords racetrack and casino.

Besides having legal on-property betting on horse racing, dog racing or jai-alai, these casinos are almost identical to most other land-based casinos. However, depending on the laws of thestates where they are located, some may not offer live table games, or may only have slot machines.

A somewhat new development at pari-mutuel facilities in states where traditional casino gambling is illegal is something called “historical racing machines.” These are considered Class IImachines similar to the bingo-based machines at many Indian casinos but instead of being based on a bingo card, the results of these games are based on racing results from previous horse races.

Land-Based Casinos

Land-based casinos refer to the typical casinos that people often think of when they think of a casino. An example of this would a popular casino in Las Vegas or Atlantic City. Casino gamblingwas legalized in Nevada in 1931 and it was the only state to offer that type of gambling until 1977 when New Jersey legalized casinos for its seaside resort town of Atlantic City. It is theseland-based, stand-alone, casinos that were the original forms of casinos until riverboat and Indian casinos came along in the 1990s.

Riverboat Casino Locations

Riverboat casinos are exactly what they sound like - casinos located inside riverboats. These are found in many states throughout the South and the Midwest such as Illinois,Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Mississippi. However, they have evolved over the years as the laws and regulations have been quite relaxed. Originally, they were required to leave the dock andcruise for several hours periodically throughout the day. In the beginning, some states even required the casinos to enact loss limits during these cruises.

Eventually, the loss limits were lifted, as were the requirements for them to cruise periodically, and they began operations constantly docked on the river. Some states later allowed thecasinos to be built on floating barges in man-made lagoons fed from the rivers. That is where most of the states are now, however some states such as Mississippi have now allowed their“riverboat” casinos to operate on land. As much as that does not make sense, the rules still require these facilities to be built within a certain distance from the water.

From Kt:I go to this casino 3-4 times a year, and have been since the casino was built. Yes, the machines are tighter than they are in Vegas, but most Tribal casinos are. And yes, they seem to be getting tighter lately, but from what I hear from friends that gamble in Vegas and AC frequently ALL the casinos are tightening up. I am not a high roller, mostly quarter keno, poker, and slots, but I get in enough play that my room and some of my meals are comped when I go.
The hotel and casino are both very nice and clean, the service is good (much better than it was the last time I was in Atlantic City), and the food in the restaurants is ok.....but if you are looking for a Cesar's Palace experience with a celebrity chef in the restaurant, don't bother going here.
I, personally, love the place. The have games that I like to play and have not seen in other casinos....namely Shamrock Sevens poker and Super Ball video keno. Yes, the machines are tighter than they are in Vegas, but people DO win there, I have seen many jackpots go and have even won a few myself. Let's face it....you gamble and some days you win, some days you lose; it is like that in any casino you go to.

From Patricia:This was my first time going to the Cherokee casino, I enjoyed myself very much, got very busy though, lost a lot of money, hardly hit anything, so I just went shopping in the area, loved that, very interesting things do see and do there besides gamble. slots are very very tight. I like the video tables they had but to me a real person is more personal. I will be back in the future, probably will lose again of course since this casino is so tight. I just moved to S.C. form the Gulf Coast and I sure do miss my Casinos there, I had a better chance to come home with a little bit of money. I think if you go to Cherokee you will like it.

From Ben
: This is an Indian casino with a nice hotel. No alcohol is allowed on the property nor sold in the county. None is served on the casino floor nor in dining areas. Table games are electronic with the live dealer pushing buttons for the cards to appear on your video screen. Slot machines are average and very busy when the Tour Busses are in. I have played numerous times and find this one of the tightest casinos anywhere. I generally play to maintain my player level for other properties. The buffet is mainly southern fried food. The Steak House quality is uneven. The snack bar is your best option.
From Peggy: The casino is not half bad, considering this is the only casino in North Carolina. Keep in mind that there are no live dealers. Food was ok. I was actually there to see a concert. The venue resembles high school auditorium, but it's nice to have a small venue since you can't possibly have a bad seat. It's definitely a spot to go to fill the need of gambling without going to Vegas or Atlantic City.

From Heather
: This hotel and casino is great. I love the non smoking area. The food is great! and the hospitality is out of this world.

From Pocco: Very disappointing. No interplay between croupier, boxmen or dealers as there are none! Smoke-filled, limited choice of gaming.

From Jackie: I have been to Cherokee a few times... I moved to the charlotte area from Las Vegas 2 1/2 years ago. I had the fever! I needed to hear the sound of coins dropping! Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations... Computer generated dealers? What is that? Me no like! So to the machines I will go. I did have fun even without a high ball! Did I win? Of course not! That's my luck. I've also brought friends along to partake in gaming at this establishment. You do receive a Players card. I have accumulated enough for a free room and some discounts and cash. It's funny how in the 2 1/2 years I've been here I've never been able to receive any of those comps.

From Cecilia: I was in Harrah's, Cherokee, NC last year. It was a great experience. They had a lot of promotions. It was full of activities. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I would surely love to go back and have more fun.

From Nancy:Harrah's in Cherokee is fun, don't go expecting to win, as it is ALWAYS a tight casino. There is no alcohol, no real cards, and you have to look for a place to stay on short notice. Have fun at Harrah's Cherokee N.C., but expect to leave with your pockets empty.

From Annie: While visiting my daughter in Georgia, we took a day trip. The ride was beautiful the area is lovely. The casino was mediocre. However, I live within driving distance to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in CT. No live dealers, no alcohol (didn't matter to me, but I was surprised). The slots are really tight... no big win bells going off. Not worth the ride for the casino, but okay for the surrounding area.

From Lois: I've been to the casino at Cherokee that ought to be rich - nobody wins hardly anything. I think they need to stop being so tight and more people will come. All you see is people walking around empty the machines when everybody have lost their money.

From Laine: I live in Tennessee and go to Harrah's all the time either alone or with some friends for an evening out. The staff at the casino are the best! Everyone is super nice and go out of their way to make sure that you have a good time. The food selection is good, parking and shuttle is great, and there are tons of different games to choose from. It's not Vegas but it's fun, especially if you like slots. Could be looser but I have won several jackpots over the years. Fun shopping too if you are out of the area and enjoy crafts, etc. Beautiful Smokey Mt. National Forest and Gatlinburg just 'over the hill'. To each their own but I highly recommend Harrah's. Love it!
