Casino Royale 2006 Distribution

MGM and Eon Productions actively seeking distribution partner for next James Bond film.

The last two Bond films starring Daniel Craig as Agent 007 (2006's Casino Royale and 2008's Quantum of Solace)each have grossed about $600 million worldwide, but given the cost and profit. Andrew's Blu-ray Review: At the height of the James Bond craze in the mid-sixties, the studio executives at Columbia Pictures desperately wanted to capitalize on the 007 phenomenon, but Harry Saltman and Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli, who had a distribution deal with United Artists. Owned the rights to every Ian Fleming novel except one ‘Casino.

MGM and Eon Productions are being pitched by five different studios, at least if a report in the New York Post is correct. The piece is based on information provided by five anonymous sources.

The James Bond series is currently without a distribution partner after the deal with Sony expired after SPECTRE (2015). The Japanese giant came on board the Bond series with Casino Royale (2006) for a two picture deal that was renewed after Quantum of Solace (2008). Currently MGM/Eon are seeking a one picture deal.

Apparently Sony pitched MGM/Eon on Tuesday in style. According to the New York Times:

Sony gave its presentation inside a sound stage on a recreated set from “Dr. No,” which was released in the United States in 1963 by United Artists and laid the foundation for the entire series.

The other studios vying for the right to distribute Bond are:

  • Warner Bros
  • Universal Pictures
  • 20th Century Fox
  • Annapurna

The author notes that although the Bond series is prestigious, it pays relatively little. Under the deal with Sony they payed half of the production costs in return for a quarter of the profit. Still, it is a solid bet and likely to deliver for whoever they partner with.

Furthermore casting has not been discussed during these meetings, suggesting Daniel Craig still has not committed to the next film.

Heineken is the first in the history of James Bond to shoot its commercialusing the actual Bond film set. It is also the only time that lead Bondactors feature in a brand advertising campaign linked to 'Casino Royale.'In addition to the appearance of Eva Green, in character and costume asVesper Lynd, the original Bond themed music is featured in the Heinekencommercial.

The commercial has all the ingredients of a Bond film -- sophistication,suspense and action, with a twist of humour. The plot shows James Bond'sco-star Vesper Lynd entering Hotel Splendide to rendezvous with Bond in hisroom. In 'Casino Royale,' Vesper is sent by 'M' to keep a watchful eye onBond. In the Heineken ad, Vesper's mission continues. As she strides acrossthe lobby, she observes some suspicious activity. In the end, Vesper getsher Heineken.
